Eating Disorder Advocates of Ohio

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is the largest community outreach activity in the nation dedicated to helping prevent eating disorders and body dissatisfaction. EDAO has brought this outreach opportunity to Northeast Ohio in an effort to ultimately prevent eating disorders and body image issues while reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment. Sunday, February 21: Scale Smashing

The week started with a literal bang on Sunday, February 21 with a Public Scale Smashing in Cleveland, Ohio. EDAO members, eating disorder sufferers, friends, families and supporters will be taking sledge hammers, bowling balls and baseball bats to those dreaded bathroom scales to “celebrate that we are more than a number.” The event was held at The Blind Pig Nightclub and will feature live music, guest bartenders, raffles and more. Monday, February 22: Speaker Series for Educators

On Monday, February 22, The West Shore Center for Eating Disorders hosted a Speaker Series for Educators, entitled, “What to Say to Students about Eating Disorders”...a free seminar for educators, professionals and parents. 2 CEU’s.

Tuesday, February 23: Speaker Series for College Students

On Tuesday, February 23, New Beginnings Counseling hosted a Speaker Series for College Students, entitled  "A day of breaking barriers... getting real about eating disorders on campus." ED Myth Trivia Game at the Delta Gamma House at the University of Akron, Ohio from 7-9:30pm.


Tuesday, February 23: “The Perfection Trap” by keynote speaker Constance Rhodes

Constance is the author of two books, Life Inside the Thin Cage: A Personal Look into the Hidden World of the Chronic Dieter and The Art of Being: Reflections on the Beauty and the Risk of Being Who We Are (both titles by WaterBook/Random House). Her original song “To Be Free” appears on Tell Me What You See, a recording produced by Music for the Soul to benefit those struggling with eating disorders.

Wednesday, February 24: Speaker Series for the Medical Community

On Wednesday, February 24, The Cleveland Center for Eating Disorders (CCED) hosted a Speaker Series for the Medical Community entitled, “Identifying and Treating Eating Disorders in the Primary Care Setting- a talk for Professionals, Families and Patients.”

Wednesday, February 24: “Heavenly Bodies” at Malone University

Speaker, Travis Stewart, is a licensed professional counselor and co-founder of the True Campaign.  As a practicing counselor, he provides individual and family therapy for a variety of issues has also served on the staff at Remuda Ranch.


Thursday, February 25: “America the Beautiful”

America the Beautiful is a film by Darryl Roberts that explores the question…Does America have an unhealthy obsession with beauty?

Place: Malone University , Randall Campus Center


Saturday, February 27: EDAO Original Live Performance at Gardner Theatre

EDAO presented the exclusive premier showing of an original multi-media presentation entitled “Behind the Mask of Perception” at the University of Akron Gardner Theatre. “Behind the Mask of Perception” is a unique collaboration of stories and perceptions and survival in our eating disordered culture. The production will also be used following that performance in various forms, including film and educational outreach in order to raise awareness.


EDAO has the privilege to have Deb Lemire from Queen Bee Productions as director of this documentary. Deb is Founder and Artistic Director of Queen Bee Productions, a professional organization producing creative works that advocate for women.  QBP offers workshops, talks and performance presentations that focus on issues important to women including body and size acceptance.

Week-long Activities

Finally, EDAO will be challenging society to “Get Real!” and “Be Comfortable in Your Jeans!” (& GENES) by donating any jeans that no longer fit.  Jeans will be collected at each of the events throughout the week.  All items will be donated to The Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties.
